What type of cameras can we use for photography?

It’s a general perception that only expensive gear can produce great photographs. However, that’s not entirely true. It’s not at all necessary to have expensive gear to produce great-looking images. Some people are better at taking photographs not because they have expensive photography gear but because they know how to use it, and most importantly understand the fundamentals of photography. So, before you consider the type of camera to use, here’s a look at how you should approach photography.

  • Learn the Basics

The first thing that you need to do as a beginner in photography is to learn the basics. Study how the ISO, Shutter Speed, Focus, and Aperture work. Understand more about compositions and techniques that will help you create more appealing photographs.

While you learning the basics of photography, consider buying a refurbished or second-hand “pro” camera. Use this camera to figure out your needs and what exactly you want from it. Explore all the settings of the camera, play around with Shutter Speed, ISO, Aperture first. And, then if you got a camera with different lenses start trying out those too and see how it affects your images. Keep experimenting until you reach its limitations. The point here is to get familiar with the camera so you can use it the way you want and not depend on what feature it offers. Once you know everything, think about upgrading.

If you are just starting out with photography, you can also explore the camera that comes with your smartphone. Some of them offer manual settings, which is the best and the cheapest place to start with.

  • Upgrade Your First Camera

Now that you have fully explored the camera and mastered the basics, it’s time to upgrade. At this stage, you are most likely aware of your photography needs. So, go ahead and buy on your instinct, especially if you are serious about the photography business. If you are still in a dilemma, you can read up more about the features that you want in your DSLR and which model and make provides it. You can also consider buying a mirrorless camera if you are interested in travel photography, as these cameras are smaller and lighter in comparison to DSLRs. Or if you are interested in portrait photography, you can use both DSLR and mirrorless cameras to get the best of both worlds!

And, last but not the least, just remember that every camera is different and you can buy any one of these available in the market. Be it a point-and-shoot, DSLR, mirrorless, bridge camera, or a smartphone camera, the resulting photograph depends on the person behind the lens and not on the machine.
